Before joining the Ignite team, Andy had worked for the organisation for 10 years. He had been hugely successful. He had earned excess bonus ratings on a quarterly basis and had rapidly moved to the top of his salary scale.
Have you ever experienced this kind of behaviour from team members?
I think it’s fair to say that the pandemic allowed us to stop, take stock, consider what is important in life, and question how valued we feel. For me, that happened in April 2011 after returning to work following my second maternity leave. Financially, I felt I had no choice but to return whilst I certainly wasn’t ready emotionally.
Back in my former corporate life, I took on a project in which I took nine hand-selected under-performing employees on a 12-week journey of self-discovery. By using a coaching and leadership process to engage disillusioned employees, I was able to re-ignite the team’s passion and self-belief so that they could go on and achieve huge successes.
Forming a team takes time, and members often go through recognisable stages of change, from being a collection of strangers to becoming a united group with common goals. Bruce Tuckman’s Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing model describes these stages. When you understand it, you can help your team become more effective far more quickly. You can learn more about the Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing stages from the Mind Tools website at: http://www.mindtools.com.
